One minute everything’s ticking along nicely; the next you’ve got oil on the ground, pressure dropping and a crew stuck twiddling their thumbs.
A blown hydraulic hose can bring your site to a standstill without as much as a warning. But while hose failures are part and parcel of working with hydraulic machinery, the way you respond makes the difference to the amount of damage, downtime and cost involved.
Most hydraulic hoses fail gradually because of a combination of age, heat and general wear and tear. Add to that equation the odd pressure spike or a damaged fitting, and a hose that is hanging in there can be pushed beyond breaking point.
Importantly, a hose doesn’t usually burst out of nowhere. Usually, there are early warning signs that proactive maintenance can pick up on.
If your hydraulic hose breaks, the first thing to do is shut the machine down and follow your site safety procedures. Hydraulic fluid can stay under pressure even after the equipment is switched off, so don’t run your hand along the hose looking for the leak.
In some cases, a failed hose will not just leak oil. It can spray hydraulic fluid forcefully in multiple directions, creating an immediate safety and environmental risk. Once the machine is shut down and the area is safe, retrieve your spill kit, contain the oil spill as quickly as possible, and follow your site’s health and safety protocols.
Whatever you do, don’t try to carry out a makeshift repair. It won’t handle hydraulic pressure and can put your machinery and team at risk. Instead, call a hydraulic hose repair specialist who can replace the hose and work out what caused it to fail. If you do not have a spill kit available, ADP Hydraulics’ mobile service vehicles carry spill kits that can be made available for customers to use where needed.
Unfortunately, a hydraulic hose rarely fails without damaging other components in the process, especially if it’s not noticed early. Low fluid levels and contamination will put extra strain on the pumps, cylinders and the wider system.
Getting the repair sorted early limits the damage and gets the machine back into service sooner.

It depends on the hose, access, fittings and whether anything else has been damaged. With the right parts on hand, it’s usually a quick process.
Generally, we recommend damaged hydraulic hoses should be replaced rather than patched.
The most common causes we see are abrasion, age, heat, pressure spikes, poor installation or damaged fittings.
